Approval for a new look for Warringah Mall
In December 2008 Warringah Mall lodged three Development Applications with Warringah Council:
· for a Master Plan covering the potential expansion of the centre to 2021, adding up to 35,000 square metres lettable area
· for Stage 1 of the Master Plan, being the construction of a new two-level retail mall of approximately 8,000 square metres of lettable area (70-80 shops)
· for significant stormwater improvements works
Following on from the approval of the Master Plan in December 2009, on 5 May 2010 Warringah’s Development Assessment Panel at Warringah Council handed down its decision to approve Stage 1 of the Master Plan. The key component of Stage 1 will add 8,000sqm of retail floor space, equivalent to 70-80 new shops, with a new two-level retail mall running between Myer and Woolworths on the ground floor and Big W on the first floor. Moreover, the redevelopment plans will also create over 500 new car spaces more than Warringah Mall currently has.
There are still many steps to be taken before any construction can be undertaken, and it is unlikely that any work could commence before the middle of 2011. However, this is a great milestone for the proposed enhancement of Warringah Mall and is the first stage of a long term plan to ensure Warringah Mall remains competitive whilst catering for the changing needs and demographics of the Northern Beaches.
